Cadmium Borates

The anhydrous orthoborate, Cd₃(BO₃)₂, has been prepared by fusing potassium hydrogen fluoride, boron trioxide, and cadmium oxide in molecular proportions. On treating the cooled melt with water prismatic crystals of 3CdO.B₂O₃ are obtained. They have a marked effect on polarised light, dissolve readily in acids, and are not acted upon by water.

A metaborate, CdO.B₂O₃, has been obtained by melting cadmium oxide and boron trioxide together.

Various compounds of the general formula xCdO.yB₂O₃.zH₂O have been prepared by precipitating a solution of a cadmium salt with borax or treating cadmium carbonate with boric acid.
